Impressions of Personal Health among Collegians: What Relationships and Faith Factors Predict Health Related Quality of Life among College Students?
Wang, Solomon; Distelberg, Brian
College Student Journal, v53 n2 p252-262 Sum 2019
There is growing evidence that college freshmen's impression of their subjective health and well-being or health-related quality of life, is falling. As critical period for newly launched young adults, subjective impressions of one's health can determine academic and psychosocial outcomes for better or worse. This explorative longitudinal study investigated the relationship between health-related quality of life (HRQL) and various social and faith factors associated with the home-to-college transition. Utilizing a general linear modeling (GLM) approach, this study incorporates data from 347 Christian university students, with results revealing that over the course of one school year, the factors of gender, time, significant emotional relationships, psychosocial abuse history, and faith importance predicted HRQL. There were also unique interactions among the variables that predicted outcomes. The findings provide theoretical and practical insights on how colleges and universities can address collegian's subjective impression of their personal health and cultivate resiliency in their student body, particularly among incoming freshmen.
