Inspiring Young Earth Scientists and Challenging Stereotypes
Sutton, Kate
Primary Science, n169 p10-12 Sep 2021
Burlington Junior School in the East Riding of Yorkshire decided to highlight some excellent role models to its pupils during British Science Week 2021, who were not the stereotypical male, white, old or dead scientist. The intention was to make learning more relevant, more accessible and therefore more engaging and informative. It was hoped that this would enhance science capital and enable the learners to develop a greater affinity or interest in the subject. Each year group chose a living scientist to study and in year 3 (ages 7-8) it was decided to focus on earth scientist, Dr. Anjana Khatwa, linking with a science unit of work on rocks and other recent research about palaeontologist Mary Anning, including a link with the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset. Anjana agreed to participate in a "Google Meet" with the pupils during British Science Week. On Thursday 11 March Dr. Anjana Khatwa was welcomed, albeit virtually, for what proved to be an engaging and thought-provoking session with all the pupils. Anjana shared various stories about her learning journey to becoming an earth science expert. She also shared many different rocks with the pupils and they were fascinated. She was so approachable and made everyone feel so at ease that the pupils seemed to forget about the barrier that being online could have created. Anjana was truly inspirational and encouraged everyone at school, particularly with regard to the benefits of making connections, following your dreams and having a real sense of respect, awe and wonder for the planet.
