Psychological Sense of Community, Perceived Social Support, and Grief Experiences among Bereaved College Students
McNally, Rachel D. S.; Winterowd, Carrie L.; Farra, Aisha
College Student Journal, v55 n1 p67-79 Mar 2021
The purpose of the present study was to explore significant predictors of current and past grief among bereaved college students, including time since the death loss (number of months), level of emotional closeness college students felt toward their deceased loved ones, their psychological sense of community to college, and their perceived social support from family and friends. A total of 131 bereaved undergraduate college students completed an online survey which included questions about their demographics, questions about their experiences of grief, and the following questionnaires: Scale of Emotional Closeness, Texas Revised Inventory of Grief, Collegiate Psychological Sense of Community Scale, and Perceived Social Support -- Friends and Family. Results indicated that college students' level of emotional closeness to their deceased loved ones and psychological sense of community in college were the significant predictors of grief. Recommendations for counseling services, academic support, and resources on campus were offered.
