Becoming a Strong Montessori Team through Spirituality
Lapierre, Christine M. A.
Montessori Life: A Publication of the American Montessori Society, v31 n2 p42-49 Sum 2019
The word spirituality has a variety of meanings. Maria Montessori explored different facets of spirituality in her writings. Though she did not explicitly define "spirituality," she focused on the spiritual nature of the child and of the teacher-child relationship, as well as the spiritual preparation of the teacher. During her lifetime, she concentrated more exclusively on the adult-child relationship, and more specifically, the teacher-child relationship. A gap remains in spirituality as it relates to the work between Montessori teachers. In this article, the author seeks to extend Montessori's knowledge about the teacher-child relationship to team relationships in the classroom. She also will broaden the term "spirituality," as developed in the field of adult education, to include how teams work together in harmonious ways to bring their best to children in the Montessori classroom. The author will also explore the ideas of servant-leadership and authenticity as they relate to strong teamwork.
