Statewide Apprenticeships: Building Pathways in Community and Technical Colleges
Anderson, Lexi; Keily, Tom
New Directions for Community Colleges, n196 p97-105 Win 2021
As employers look for skilled individuals to fill high-demand jobs, registered apprenticeships provide opportunities for people to engage in dedicated on-the-job training in conjunction with related classroom instruction that directly links to a career path. The benefit of related instruction in tandem to on-the-job training is clear; however, the connection between postsecondary education and apprenticeships is less clear. Historically, states have looked to community and technical colleges to provide the related instruction required for registered apprenticeships. This article takes a deeper dive into how three states coordinate training for registered apprenticeships across a range of industries through community and technical colleges. The authors conducted surveys with key stakeholders coordinating registered apprenticeships in the state. Based on the surveys, the article provides historical perspectives of apprenticeships, overviews of statewide apprenticeship programs, and state policy considerations for future innovation.
