Community colleges navigate a policy landscape or "policyscape" that was not created for them but that affects them in numerous ways. The concluding article introduces the idea of the "policyscape" in the community college context, and provides examples from the volume of when and how policies can be updated (what Mettler calls "policy maintenance") to support community colleges and their missions. We argue that the volume identifies ways that community colleges are affected by policy design effects, unintended consequences, and lateral effects. We use the policyscape framework to synthesize takeaways from the volume and suggest directions for future research and institutional action.
