Voices and Sounds Heard: Composing through Narrative Podcasting
Aaron Guggenheim; David Glover; Alexia Gisel Alvarado Mejia
English Journal, v110 n4 p37-44 Mar 2021
In this article, the authors (Aaron Guggenheim, a White cisgender researcher and English Language Arts (ELA) teacher, and David Glover, a mixed-race, cisgender former ELA teacher) explore how a digital writing project on podcasting enacted with eleventh and twelfth graders provided opportunities to uncover the students' hidden identities as adolescent writers and storytellers. In particular, they wanted for students to document what Steph Ceraso calls "surprising and unpredictable" sounds from their lives to create a shared understanding with their listeners of how sounds affected their lives. They invited Alexia Mejia, a Latina high school student who participated in the project, to be a coauthor because they believe in directly including a student perspective when writing about ELA classrooms. Alexia and her partner composed a podcast about being young parents of their child. Alexia closes the article by sharing her experience composing that podcast.
