Culturally Sensitive Practice and the Spiritual Embryo

Montessori Life: A Publication of the American Montessori Society, v31 n4 p48-53 Win 2020
The child's emerging sense of identity is deeply informed by their culture. Teachers who are called to work with children 0-3 know and understand that their role in the children's lives is to create a kind of second womb for them in the Infant & Toddler years; this second womb is created with the carefully prepared environment. After the physical growth that occurs in utero is complete, so begins the psychic development of the infant and toddler in the first 3 years of life. It is in this sacred and protected space that the child can safely emerge from the unconscious absorbent mind to the consciousness of the second phase of the first plane of development. Creating this magic environment is easier said than done. Teachers have more work to do to bring this essential practice into day-to-day interactions with children and families, to create the kind of environments designed for the optimum development of the child in the spiritual embryo. To do this, there is a need to increase cultural consciousness--the process of developing awareness of culture in the self, which can result in expanding understandings of culture and deeper knowledge about other people and their cultural contexts.
