Leading with Emotional and Social Intelligence: Implications for FCS Professionals
Holland, Jacqueline M.
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v113 n3 p62-68 Spr 2021
One of the goals for family and consumer sciences (FCS) educators who work with secondary and post-secondary students is to equip them with the skills needed for future careers. Regardless of the work environment, effective leaders who have an accurate understanding of their emotions and social skills are able to use them to obtain positive results when working with others. Leadership is a broad concept, and its application can range from one designated to be in charge of others to that of spearheading an idea in a non- official capacity. Goleman (2018) believes that a great leader is more than someone who is strategic, can inspire, or has fantastic views. This person also has finesse in working through emotions and social agility as they accomplish the goal. The purpose of this article is to discuss the components of emotional and social intelligence and their application in the scope of leadership. As FCS professionals demonstrate and facilitate emotional and social intelligence leadership in their practice settings, they create a supportive environment that inspires youth, young adults, and colleagues to utilize these practical principles as well.
