This instructional resource presents contemporary works of art that illuminate and revel in the decadence, decay, and potential for regeneration imminent in organic matter decomposition. In so doing, these artists employ a range of strategies that might be drawn on in the art classroom: observing, illustrating, and reinterpreting decay; collaborating with agents of decomposition; and questioning cultural norms surrounding mortality. Destabilizing cultural narratives of individuality and superiority, survival and competition, the artworks emphasize interdependence and shared biological experience. As the contemporary works featured in this instructional resource raise consciousness of, and likely appreciation for, natural cycles of life and death, they might serve an ecopedagogical function, helping K-12 students to cultivate ecological sensibilities. Thus, exposure to and dialogue with these works might influence students' patterns of perception, understandings, and values--contributing to their environmental awareness and likelihood of taking environmental action.
