Post-COVID Enrollment and Postsecondary Planning
Prescott, Brian T.
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v53 n3 p6-13 2021
The pandemic's impact on enrollment is best documented by timely reports issued by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. Their reporting as of December 2020 showed that overall enrollment in fall 2020 declined by about 2.5%, although it was down more among undergraduates, about 3.6%. While students from all racial/ethnic groups had enrollment drops, numbers fell most among those from underrepresented races/ethnicities--a troubling trend given widespread efforts to close the persistent gaps in access, success, and educational attainment. The impact of these declines on future enrollment and completion levels is not yet known. Looking further into the future, the question remains as to whether the drop in the college-going rate of high school graduates is indicative of large numbers of graduates simply delaying their eventual enrollment. Postsecondary planning efforts will need to rely on the best available projection data, combined with more just-in-time data and insights about student intentions drawn from surveys.
