What It Takes to Create a Vaccine and Biomedical Engineering
Wright, Geoffrey A.; Bartholomew, Scott R.
Technology and Engineering Teacher, v80 n7 p20-23 Apr 2021
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the engineering profession with the highest demand in 2021 is biomedical engineering (BME) (BLS, January 2021). Biomedical engineers combine engineering principles with medical and biological sciences to design and create equipment, devices, computer systems, and software used in healthcare (BLS, 2021). Despite the high current need for BME professionals, BME is often one of the least represented engineering content areas in many technology and engineering curriculum/programs (Bartholomew, Mahoney, Warner, Lecorchick, & Shumway, 2020). Although BME may not be a strength of most Technology and Engineering teachers, the overwhelming impact of the COVID-19 pandemic presents a prime opportunity for subtle adjustments to be made in curriculum and classroom efforts. In this article, the authors present one lesson idea--centered on BME and viruses--that could be used as a template for additional BME lesson plans and ideas.
