Surveying the Labyrinth of Relationships in Academia: Testimonios from Brown Faculty
Cordova, Amanda Jo; García-Louis, Claudia; Niño, Juan Manuel
SoJo Journal: Educational Foundations and Social Justice Education, v6 n1-2 p69-84 2020
This qualitative inquiry centers the work of three Brown faculty members who engage chismeo academico and testimonio to counter the labyrinth of relationships framed in oppressive gender binaries. The testimonios reclaim the richness of Brown folx relationship resistance to center cultural ways of thinking, speaking, and being in the day-to-day discourses and operations of the academy to disrupt the social norms of patriarchy. In the image of our varied identities, we forge a path out of the labyrinth by building relationships of solidarity ready to feel the discomfort of acknowledging, correcting, and reconciling the harm we as Brown folx do to one another, and to normalize these processes as an act of radical love that must take hold in the academy for the liberation of gendered oppressions.
