Children's Recognition of Words in Familiar Logos
Ahmad, Jamal
International Journal of Early Years Education, v29 n1 p75-87 2021
The purpose of this study was to assess whether Arab speaking children ages 5, 6 and 7 can read a word in a logo with the print, colour, and context as opposed to when the word is in black and white in manuscript form. The purpose of the study is important because it adds to the body of knowledge about how children develop literacy skills across cultures. A total of 646 children from Al-Zarqa city in Jordan were presented with commonly encountered food and drink logos and asked to read the words in the logo. Results revealed that younger children were most likely to correctly read the word when it was within context of the logo rather than in black and white manuscript in contrast to older children who could read the words of the logo correctly whether in context or out of context. The results of the study show that younger children, but not older, lack the ability to read absent the colour and context of the logo. This is consistent with previous studies that also found that younger children rely on contexts of colour, graphics, and surroundings to ascertain a word's meaning.
