Dost Education: A Friend along the Education Journey
Wasan, Arushi
Childhood Education, v97 n1 p36-41 2021
Throughout her career, Dost Education's co-founder and CEO Sneha Sheth met many parents across varying global contexts and was always amazed by the grit and determination of under-resourced parents to see their children thrive. In 2016, Sneha conducted a focus group on early childhood development with 80 parents from Dharavi. She already knew there was a glaring gap between the motivation and confidence levels of parents--illiterate and low literacy mothers were extremely under-confident about partaking in their children's learning and development, even though they were highly motivated to do whatever it took to help their children lead better lives. These mothers believed they didn't have the skills to teach their children anything, as they themselves had never been to school. When this gap between parents' motivation and confidence affects a child's learning during their earliest and most crucial years, it is hard for the child to ever catch up. This article describes Dost Education's efforts to reach these parents at scale and nudge them to begin their early learning journey.
