Technology and Engineering Teacher, v80 n2 p14-19 Oct 2020
Informal STEM education experiences can be invaluable to students as a means of developing their future career goals and career interests. Extracurricular programs in the form of clubs, competitions, teams, and activities provide a platform for these informal education experiences. There are many STEM-focused extracurricular options for students, parents, and educators. "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology" ("FIRST"®) is one of those options, setting itself apart from other STEM-focused extracurriculars due to its prioritization of participants conducting community outreach in addition to developing technical, communication, and leadership skills. This article discusses how STEM educators can support their local youth robotics competition community by facilitating learning opportunities for young children during competitions. A series of instructional materials are provided.
