I Got an Idea: Inside Communities of Studio Practice
Gaw, Clyde; Fralick, Clark
Art Education, v73 n6 p30-36 2020
Twenty-two individuals are drawing, painting, collaging, sculpting with cardboard, and building with wooden blocks. Some are working collaboratively, and others work alone. Dialogue with the teacher and social interaction between learners catalyze the learning experience. The core curriculum goal, expressing ideas through self-directed art activity (Douglas & Jaquith, 2018), is achieved through experimentation, conversation, social interaction, choice of activities, materials, and resources. The children learn inside a classroom that situates their learning (Lave & Wenger, 1991) in the context of a learner-directed art studio experience. Observations of children's artistic behavior, language use, and social interaction inside the authors' learner-directed classrooms for nearly 2 decades serve as primary data in their research. The analysis indicates that children's creative and intellectual development is positively impacted inside K-12 art education communities of studio practice (Fralick & Gaw, 2018; Gaw, n.d.).
