Creating Successful Learners through Arts Integration
Edelen, Jennifer
Childhood Education, v96 n5 p44-51 2020
This past spring, the education industry experienced a massive paradigm shift as a result of the pandemic. In a matter of weeks, curriculum plans that had been carefully prepared and executed over two-thirds of the school year were upended, and educators were asked to revise, reorganize, and realign to address the needs and capabilities of an entirely new environment. Education resource and support providers, like the Vienna, Virginia-based Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts, also found themselves at a crossroads. They were scheduled to deliver hundreds of services, but the classrooms were empty. Nevertheless, students' basic needs remained the same: they needed to meet educational benchmarks, if not in the immediate term, then before the next academic year. Wolf Trap's Classroom Residency Program, Professional Development, and Family Involvement Workshops transformed quickly from in-person experiences to virtual ones. To share information and guidance about infusing arts into children's at-home learning, Wolf Trap Teaching Artists provided one-on-one professional coaching via phone, FaceTime, Zoom, e-mail, and other platforms. As a supplement to this coaching, Teaching Artists adapted their techniques to the smaller screen, demonstrating strategies and learning concepts via video. These videos were used as leave-behinds for their teachers, who could pass them on to their students' parents and caregivers to help them implement the strategies at home.
