Vasily Kandinsky's Versatile Art
Ward, Robin A.; Albritton, Jennifer
Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12, v113 n9 p745-750 Sep 2020
Connections is one of the Process Standards set forth by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM 2000), whereby teachers provide students with learning opportunities to "recognize and apply mathematics in contexts outside of mathematics." Similarly, the Standards for Mathematical Practice (NGA Center and CCSSO 2010) call for students to model with mathematics. A natural connection exists between mathematics and the visual arts: Both disciplines embody the study and the use of line, two- and three-dimensional shapes, patterns, proportion, and perspective. A growing body of work continues to present compelling evidence that connects student learning in the arts to advancing mathematics achievement. This article describes how a second-grade teacher used Vasily Kandinsky's "Composition VIII" as the springboard to a lesson in data creation and analysis, while also integrating geometry concepts, reading, and writing.
