Social Justice Committee 2020-2021 Focus: Health Disparities and Social Justice

Communique, v49 n1 p1, 21-22 Sep 2020
For more than 120 years, researchers have documented how minoritized and historically marginalized groups routinely experience lower levels of access and worse outcomes when interfacing with the U.S. healthcare system (Levins, 2019). Currently, COVID-19 and related media coverage underscore the continued and urgent need to address health disparities--as a social justice issue--for members of minoritized and historically marginalized groups, including those experiencing economic marginalization and persons of African, Indigenous, and Latinx descent (Sims & Coley, 2019). Although the majority of research on health disparities is focused on adult populations, the issue is relevant to the work of school psychologists given the relationship between health disparities and the environments in which children are born, grow, and live. This article introduces the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) Social Justice Committee's (SJC) focus on health disparities and social justice for the 2020--2021 academic year. The article first defines health disparities. Next, it details why health disparities are important to address for the school-age population. Then, it briefly discusses the relationship between health disparities and social justice. Finally, the article concludes with a preview of the SJC's activities for the upcoming academic year.
