The Fraught Relationship of Women's Suffrage and Race in Picture Books

From statues to picture books, the depictions of suffragists do not always do justice to the complexity of the issues and activists who fought for the 19th Amendment, which provided that "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex." This article seeks to answer the following questions and provides suggestions on how they can be explored in the classroom: how well do picture books on women's suffrage do when it comes to addressing the complex issues of race and suffrage? To what extent do picture books include the voices and activities of a variety of suffragists, their points of agreement and their points of conflict? Do they present such suffragists, flaws and all?
