In the U.S. Military: Gleaning Support for Our Deaf Sons
Sims, LaShawna
Odyssey: New Directions in Deaf Education, v21 24-27 2020
As a wife and mother of a military family, LaShawna Sims has found trying to get services for her sons is different from the work of those parents of deaf and hard of hearing children whose families are not serving in the military. For them, being in the military has required periodic moving--once in the middle of the school year--and each move required a new set of contacts, schools, teachers, and services. Still, in general they have received accommodations for their sons and support for her and her husband. In this article, she describes her experiences and her work with Hands & Voices, a parent-driven, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing support to families with children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
