Game On! A Battle. An Engaging Game about Language and Democracy Contributing to Civic Learning
Ravndal, Stian; Johansen, Ørjan Zazzera; Hammeraas, Gunhild
Journal of Museum Education, v45 n3 p226-239 2020
In the interactive game Battle developed by the Garborg Center, a literary museum in Norway, the players face an engaging political case: a fictive nation is considering changing its own unique official language to English. Four interest groups debate the language situation, from different standpoints. Identity, culture, and democracy are all in play. The Garborg Center created this interactive game to promote civic learning, and to inspire people to read, create, and participate in their communities using their opinions and ideas. The game alludes to the namesake authors of the center, Hulda and Arne Garborg, whose literature we use to tackle contemporary issues in Norway today. When our visitors are playing "Battle," we want them to reflect on how our language runs through the veins of our society. Our language is culture and identity. Our language is important in democratic processes. A language cannot be taken for granted. It has historical roots. It is evolving, changing, and, crucially, it might disappear one day. Through participation visitors are asked: does it matter?
