Nonpublic School Placements: What School Psychologists Need to Know
Yu, Rondy; Monteiro, Elissa
Communique, v49 n1 p4, 6 Sep 2020
Nonpublic schools (NPSs) are used by local education agencies (LEAs) across the country to serve students with exceptional needs. These students are often reported to suffer from mental health challenges and engage in severe problem behaviors. The social and financial costs associated with NPS placements are significant, and it is imperative that school psychologists understand the role NPSs play in the education of students as well as the role they themselves may play in supporting students who are in these placements. This article will describe (1) what NPSs are; (2) which students are placed in these settings; (3) how students are placed in these settings; and (4) how school psychologists can support students and families when NPS placements are considered and made.
