All the Way around a Circle: An Angle Lesson
Cullen, Amanda L.; Lawton, Carrie A.; Patterson, Crystal S.; Cullen, Craig J.
Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12, v113 n8 p637-642 Aug 2020
In this article, the authors discuss one lesson with 20 third-grade students at a public school in a suburban community of the midwestern region of the United States. Because this was the first time implementing the Snowboarding Spins and Flips activity, four teachers were in the room. One was the main teacher of the lesson while the other three observed the lesson but sometimes asked students questions during the group activity. In this lesson, third graders were asked how many degrees is a full rotation around a circle. After giving students time and space to disagree, to make and test conjectures, and to explore, they reasoned about angle as turn and determined a full rotation is 360 degrees.
