"Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote": Problematizing Today's Immigration Issues
Neves, Kaci
English in Texas, v44 n2 p17-19 Fall-Win 2014
To resolve questions about how to discuss immigration in the classroom the author set out to find texts to help upper elementary students problematize current immigration issues. In this article, the author discusses "Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote: A Migrant's Tale" (Tonatiuh 2013), a book in which the author weaves folkloric storytelling, Aztec-style illustration, code-switching, and ultimately succeeds in opening a dialogic space where teachers and students can discuss the complexities of the modern immigrant experience. By discussing and charting different immigration perspectives and text features, teachers and students establish a sense of community and cultural tolerance, such that both foreign-born and American-born students feel comfortable sharing personal experiences and ideas.
