Legislative Update
Kriese, Tracy
English in Texas, v46 n1 p52-54 Spr-Sum 2016
The 2015-2016 year has been an especially busy one in Texas education. Teachers and other professionals had opportunities to participate in the revision of the English language and Spanish language arts and reading Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (ELAR/SLAR TEKS), a process that is now nearing completion. As a result of several bills signed into law after the 84th Texas legislative session, changes were made in the areas of state assessment, the reporting of test results, and graduation policy. At the national level, the No Child Left Behind Act became the Every Student Succeeds Act, bringing about long-anticipated changes in the role of federal government in education.
