A Response to Raven: Values-Based Education -- Wanted!
Oles, Piotr
Psychology of Education Review, v44 n1 p31-34 Spr 2020
In "Diving in Where Angels Fear to Tread: Pre-Requisites to Evidence-Based Interventions," John Raven poses a crucial question if the current education system guarantees a high quality of future citizens. He proposes an analytical diagnosis of this complex phenomenon of wasting individual talents and social energy due to shortcomings and errors of the education system. He also proposes some ways to manage this problem and how to act towards the improvement of the situation. In this response to Raven's paper, Piotr Oles write some notes from the perspective of personality psychology. This response refers to a model of a person who is able for self-realisation, engagement in social and common goals, responsible for himself or herself, in short -- mature: free and responsible. Oles proposes, like John Raven, values-based education. He also points out some factors which threaten the full development of human potential in adolescents. The article concludes by showing some ways how to improve the situation, how to modify education, and how to promote full human development.
