Building Collaborative Relationships with Parents: A Checklist for Promoting Success
Avendano, Sarah M.; Cho, Eunsoo
TEACHING Exceptional Children, v52 n4 p250-260 Mar-Apr 2020
Parent involvement in a child's education has been demonstrated to increase child maintenance and generalization of skills taught in early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI) settings to their home environments, improve parent-child relationships, and decrease parent stress. Parent coaching is a way to support parents' development of knowledge, skills, and application of therapeutic interventions to use during daily interactions with their child. A collaborative relationship between practitioners and parents can help to remove or reduce barriers affecting parent participation in parent coaching and work to increase parent attendance and engagement. During the collaborative parent coaching process, parents should be involved in the development of the intervention. Elements of a collaborative relationship include a voluntary and equal relationship between two or more people that is based on trust, respect, and a shared responsibility for progress toward a common goal. This article presents a Practitioner-Parent Collaborative Checklist to be used by a practitioner before, during, and after parent coaching. The checklist includes seven checklist items and supporting actions to facilitate the development of collaborative relationships in a practitioner-parent relationship.
