For Reading Comprehension, Knowledge Is Power
Redford, Kyle
Educational Leadership, v77 n5 p52-56 Feb 2020
Elementary-level teacher Redford dispels the idea that instructional time should not be spent teaching content material because content is now Googleable. As research shows, background knowledge significantly influences basic comprehension, even in very young students; students need a core of background knowledge to decipher texts and understand references. Redford shares ideas for how to teach content even in early and upper elementary grades or to poor readers, through read alouds, supplementary lessons, and so on.
