Military-Connected Students in Higher Education
Johnson, Gina; Appel, Sara
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v52 n1 p30-36 2020
Since June 22, 1944, when the Servicemen's Readjustment Act, more commonly known as the GI Bill of Rights, was signed into law, colleges and universities in the United States have been asked to open their doors to military veterans. Today there is interest by policy makers and veteran groups in better understanding this special subset of college students, acknowledging that their needs may be very different from those of their classmates. The authors use the term military-connected students rather than student veterans to acknowledge that it is more than veterans of the armed forces who are beneficiaries of funding for higher education. The term military-connected is often used to include students with a current or prior connection to the military, including dependents and spouses, and also refers to members of the National Guard, reservists, active duty personnel, and veterans. According to the "Veterans Benefits Administration Annual Benefits Report for Fiscal Year 2018," 893,725 individuals received benefits and payments through the education programs listed in Table 1. That is almost 900,000 military-connected students enrolled in higher education in FY2018. This article highlights the realities and needs of these students.
