Seeing Is Believing: 7 Tips for Increasing Elementary PE Teacher Credibility
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, v90 n9 p24-31 2019
Quality Physical Education (PE) school programs are imperative for the development of students' healthy lifestyles. While many factors impact the quality of PE programs, the effectiveness of the teacher plays an important part in the organization and advancement of a quality PE program. One way PE teachers can improve their effectiveness is by increasing their credibility. When teachers are more credible in students' eyes, students are more willing to believe in their teacher and as a result, students are more likely to learn the content and become physically literate individuals who are physically active for a lifetime. The PE literature, still at an early stage, has investigated PE teacher credibility directly and indirectly and has indicated areas that contribute to credibility, including teaching skills, role modeling and appearance. This article suggests seven tips within these areas that can enhance the credibility of the elementary PE teacher. According to elementary students, a credible PE teacher should: (a) engage students with the content, (b) help students feel good about PE, (c) help students feel secure, (d) display healthy behaviors, (e) be physically active, (f) display physical qualities, and (g) dress appropriately. These tips highlight teaching skills, behaviors, and qualities PE teachers may develop and display on a regular basis.
