The Art of Advocacy: Lessons from the National Arts Action Summit and Arts Advocacy Day
Art Education, v72 n6 p7-13 2019
As of this writing, the Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) are in danger of losing more than two-thirds of their annual 150 million dollar budgets in the federal budget proposal for 2020 (Greenberger, 2018). On March 11, 2019, the presidential budget sent to Congress proposed a 10% overall reduction in support for the U.S. Department of Education (Tankersley & Tackett, 2019). As art educators, makers, and supporters, the potential for these organizations to lose significant funding is personally and professionally distressing. However, there are effective, nonpartisan ways to engage with elected congressional representatives to garner support for nonprofit organizations and education that are central to the arts. This article provides an overview of the National Arts Action Summit (NAAS), a 2-day opportunity to learn arts advocacy and represent concerns to elected representatives in their offices in the Capitol. The author discusses the specific components of the summit, what was learned that may be of particular interest to various art educators, and makes suggestions for incorporating arts advocacy in theory and practice.
