Multicultural Supervision in School Psychology: Recommendations for Practice
Sutherland, Marah; Whalen, Angela
Communique, v48 n2 p1, 30-31 Oct 2019
One challenge when examining the literature base on multicultural supervision is the lack of research in the field of school psychology specifically. The vast majority of articles on culturally competent supervision are published in research journals specific to counseling psychologists, school counselors, and clinical psychologists. Because the research on multicultural supervision in school psychology is still relatively limited, the current paper includes recommendations from the counseling and clinical psychology literature as well. Based on the extant literature on multicultural supervision, this article provides four research-based recommendations to guide school psychology supervisors in their supervision of graduate students. The authors emphasize that multicultural competence evolves continually over time and requires ongoing work and commitment from supervisors and supervisees alike.
