Reflections on What "Art" Does in Art Therapy Practice and Research
McNiff, Shaun
Art Therapy: Journal of the American Art Therapy Association, v36 n3 p162-165 2019
Reflections on 5 decades of art therapy experience continuously return to a focus on how art heals. This question is addressed along two lines of thought. The first acknowledges the simultaneous existence of transcultural, shared dimensions of art, together with infinite differences in people, communities, and artistic expressions. The second considers the use of art making by art therapists as a primary mode of inquiry where artistic evidence informs practice and research. These trajectories converge to demonstrate continuities and new creations in the field of art therapy.
