Blind Coding Academies: A Proposed Method for Overcoming Accessibility Barriers for Individuals Who Are Blind or Severely Visually Impaired
Candela, Anthony R.
Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness, v113 n4 p387-393 Jul-Aug 2019
Computer programming (also known as coding) is a career path that many individuals choose to pursue. The occupation of computer programmer has in the past and will continue in the future to afford people who are visually impaired (i.e., those who are blind or have low vision) a wide variety of job possibilities. Because students with visual impairments face barriers in mainstream classes that teach coding, this author proposes the creation of blind coding academies that would provide a structure to prepare students who are blind or severely visually impaired (i.e., those who are unable to read what is on a computer screen) to overcome or at least mitigate these barriers. Barriers generally center on inaccessible programming editors and much more tool-laden integrated development environments (IDEs) within which the code is written and modified, visually complex textbooks and other training materials that are difficult to access and comprehend, the need to obtain information presented by instructors and professors in class, "cultural" barriers caused by traditionally "able-bodied" and occasionally male-dominated incumbents in the field of computer science, and difficulty in performing at the rapid speed that is sometimes required, especially in team activities. Successful completion of training is a necessary step to the acquisition of a first job and a career as a coder; thus, helping students overcome impediments to taking the first step is a goal well worth pursuing.
