Cultivating Familismo: Belonging and Inclusion in One Latina/o Learning Community
Gonzales, Sandra M.
International Journal of Inclusive Education, v23 n9 p937-949 2019
This qualitative study examines how belonging works in conjunction with a cultural framework called 'familismo' to promote inclusive environments for Latina/o student success. Using the inductive analysis to examine narrative essays and small stories, the values and traditions associated with familismo are revealed as well as how they are enacted in an undergraduate Latina/o learning community at an urban research university in the Midwestern United States. The findings indicate that the cultural emphasis on families is an important compliment to belonging and inclusion research when working with Latina/o students. Additionally, it offers suggestions for future research.
