Bergmark, Jennifer
Art Education, v72 n5 p47-54 2019
Author Jennifer Bergmark describes an art project with the purpose of providing a collaborative creative experience to break down school-community barriers and provide a space for conversation and community building. A goal for the school where this project took place, Stratton Academy of the Arts, located in Champaign, Illinois, is to create a culturally responsive pedagogy to incorporate "a synergistic relationship between home/community culture and school culture" (Ladson-Billings, 1995, p. 467). Incorporating the student and community in the educational process is complicated by the fact that, like many American schools, Stratton has students in varied cultural groupings that may have social conflicts, language, or class barriers that hinder communication and participation. Engaging in a community creative practice was an opportunity to celebrate accomplishments and highlight the strengths of the school community to overcome the underlying struggles with poverty, displacement, and language barriers. The author presents an artistic intervention by New York City based artist Amanda Browder that created a communal experience and temporary transformation to inspire, nurture, and empower the young students in this community.
