Defining "Place" and Understanding the Relationship between Geographic Areas and Statistical Data: An Exercise in Population Geography and In-Field Observation
Geography Teacher, v16 n3 p122-125 2019
"Place" is a central concept in geography. Geographers focus considerable attention on describing and understanding the nature of places and variations from one place to another. The collection of data and the measurement and analysis of the characteristics of a place requires that its boundaries are defined. How and where we draw boundaries, however, affects the data one collects and how one uses those data to measure and understand the nature of a place. To help his undergraduate population geography students gain an appreciation for the process and methods for defining geographic areas as well as the relationships between different types of geographic areas, Michael Ratcliffe assigns the task of defining a place or neighborhood. This assignment provides hands-on experience identifying and delineating the boundaries of a geographic area, as well as managing statistical data when the boundaries they have defined do not align with the boundaries of geographic areas used to disseminate statistical data. In the course of the project, students gain experience in three areas: (1) Delineating boundaries for a place or neighborhood; (2) Working with statistical data; and (3) Determining how to relate census geography and data to other geographic entities. An overview of the assignment and the accompanying lesson plan are provided herein.
