Feminist Teacher: A Journal of the Practices, Theories, and Scholarship of Feminist Teaching, v28 n1 p17-31 2017
Knitting groups, blogs, magazines, and fiber arts social media sites (e.g., ravelry.com) have flourished in the last decade as more women (and men) engage in the craft. The popularity of this craft today and the history of fiber arts, in general, deserve the attention of feminist scholars. Beth Ann Pentney has presented evidence for both obvious and underlying tones of feminism in the various modes of this movement. The authors have moved beyond this third-wave discourse and engaged women's studies students in an entire semester-long, mid-level course that uses a feminist lens to immerse the students in the history of the fiber arts, the empowerment of self-production, the importance of knitting for charity, and the activism that can result from knitting group dynamics. Their goal was to use a student-centered active-learning pedagogy, which synthesizes the positive aspects of the popular culture with the scholarship of women's work in the fiber arts. This article describes the semester-long course that took place at a small liberal arts college in which the women's and gender studies (WGS) degree was approved in 2003, officially joining the list of majors in 2004. Topics discussed include: (1) course goals and assignments; (2) service learning component; (3) processing animal fleece into yarn; (4) weaving; (5) dyeing fibers and fabrics; (6) growing silk worms and processing silk cocoons into silk fiber; (7) course texts; (8) outcomes for students; and (9) conclusions and ongoing work.
