A Better Tomorrow through Math
Henderson, Christie
Mathematics Teacher, v112 n7 p531-533 May 2019
Embedding mathematics in a relatable context has changed the way Christie Henderson's elementary students view the subject. In this article, Henderson discusses how presenting mathematics through a relatable context enables students to visualize the math and make a pictorial representation to aid them in solving it. When relevant and relatable math contexts are presented; all students have an entry point for mathematizing; students are more likely to visualize the math and use representations, models, and drawings in their work; rich discussions come out of the work; and students see purpose in the work they are doing--purpose that may help them see how they can make a positive difference in the world through mathematics.
