Investigative Performers: Exploring Documentation in Art
LaJevic, Lisa; Long, Kelsey
Art Education, v72 n3 p8-14 2019
Many students are actively involved with social networking sites; they follow friends in virtual worlds and post personal information and photographs online daily. Although they may not realize it, students are publicly "documenting" their private lives on social media to allow others to learn about them. Understanding documentation as a complex space of inquiry in art and popular culture provides exciting opportunities for the classroom. Artists, such as Sophie Calle, a contemporary artist who combines photography and performance, investigate the concept of documentation in their artmaking and challenge traditional notions of art. With a personal interest in the topic, the authors wanted to design a curricular activity that invites students to learn about others through documentation while making connections to social media. Recognizing the curricular possibilities of documentation, the authors created a lesson inspired by Calle that asked students to become investigative performers. In the activity, high school and preservice art education students explored "Suite VĂ©nitienne" (1980) and "The Hotel" (1981), and engaged in artmaking where they investigated and recorded the immediate life of a friend or family member. Relating the lesson to topics such as "following" friends on social media, students participated in thought-provoking discussions about identity, intimacy, and privacy that examined how a person conveys information allowing others to learn about their life.
