Common Strengths of Various Types of Family Caregiving: Applications for Research, Teaching, and Practice in Family and Consumer Sciences
Yancura, Loriena
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v110 n4 p7-13 Fall 2018
The term "family caregiving" applies to a variety of caregiving situations: individuals caring for family members who are older adults; grandparents raising their grandchildren without the presence of the children's parents; parents caring for adult children with physical or intellectual disabilities; and minor children providing care to adult parents. This article describes issues relevant to these types of family caregiving situations and identifies commonalities among them from a strengths-based perspective. It then discusses implications for caregiving within the realms of research, teaching, and practice in family and consumer sciences. There are only four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers.
