Toward a Moratorium on Publishing in the Field of Educational Studies: Where Is This Train Going?
Kelly, Hilton
Educational Studies: Journal of the American Educational Studies Association, v55 n1 p1-11 2019
The author poses the following questions: (1) Are teachers making the impact that they think they are making? (2) Through teachers' intellectual writing, have they closed or widened the theory-practice gap in educational studies? (3) Are they fulfilling the mission of the organization? and (4) Does the mission of the organization need to be expanded to link what they do to what they do? To begin to answer these questions, the author argues, teachers need a moratorium on publishing in the field of educational studies. By moratorium, he does not mean to suggest that teachers should stop publishing articles, book chapters, and books indefinitely. Rather, he contends that they need to pause as individuals and as an organization to work on some fundamental problems of our discipline. A moratorium would give them time to reacquaint themselves with the mission, purpose, and history of the American Educational Studies Association (AESA) and to understand who they are and what they do as teachers and scholars. [This speech is the 2018 AESA Presidential Address.]
