A Snapshot of Writing in Elementary Teacher Preparation Programs
Brenner, Devon; McQuirk, Ashley
New Educator, v15 n1 p18-29 2019
Schools are increasing the time students spend learning to write, in part because of changing state standards. Studies of classroom practice suggest that most teachers devote little time to the teaching of writing, and many teachers report they do not feel prepared to teach writing. Here, we examine the titles and descriptions of required literacy courses in 42 elementary teacher education programs from seven states to take a snapshot of the focus on the teaching of writing in elementary teacher education. Course titles and descriptions generally represent the overall focus of methods coursework. Of the 155 required literacy pedagogy courses we identified, only two were the teaching of writing. Five courses included the word "writing" in the title, and 38 used "writing" in the course description. Reading was counted most often, and "literacy" and "language arts" were also used to refer to course content more frequently than "writing." This snapshot is intended to call for inquiry among teacher educators about preparing teachers to teach writing.
