Identity: Three Global Perspectives
Vatsky, Sharon
Art Education, v69 n6 p50-56 2016
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum launched a project, the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative, with the goal of broadening the geographic representation of the Guggenheim's holdings and to create a truly global collection. Inspired by this project, this article discusses three contemporary artists: (1) Navin Rawanchaikul, from Thailand; (2) Alfredo Jaar, from Chile, and (3) Kader Attia, born in France, and raised in Algeria. Information includes a short essay focusing on the artist and the selected work; sample inquiry-based questions designed to support classroom discussion; suggestions for cross-curricular activities that may include writing, research, and/or artmaking; and additional online resources that may include links to high resolution images, videos, interviews, and/or articles. When these artists' works were on view in the museum's galleries, they sparked conversations, raised issues, and prompted new areas of inquiry for students and teachers alike.
