The Daily Noodle-Doodle: Increasing Engagement with Elementary Art Students
Mathes, Katy
Art Education, v70 n1 p16-22 2017
Student engagement and autonomy work to foster growth in students and increase the amount of time they spend creating artwork. Maximizing artmaking time for students is crucial. In elementary art, classroom management is key. In order to address her biggest struggle--classroom management at the beginning of class (student engagement, timing, and transitions during this time)--Katy Mathes started constructing a technology-driven classroom management system. Transitions are encompassed in the system, resulting in fast, seamless classroom routines. The system she created, called the Daily Noodle-Doodle, increases engagement, builds student autonomy, and streamlines transitions. Beyond this, it allows the class to reach their artmaking and instructional goals in a concise 45 minutes. The name of the Daily Noodle-Doodle materialized due to the nature of the activity. Students "use their noodle," or brain, to respond to the question or directive on an individual white board. Then, if they have spare time afterward they may do their "doodle," or drawing underneath.
