Despite Supreme Court cases which have upheld the 1978 Bakke ruling, the Department of Justice (DOJ) is considering challenging colleges that consider race as a factor in admissions. As colleges and universities prepare to return to the fray in response to the most recent surfacing of this issue, One might ask if everything possible is being done to support holistic admissions policies that work within the terms that Justice Powell laid out in 1978 and which have been re-affirmed by the Court in 2003 and 2016. The author maintains that to support the holistic admissions process acknowledged by the Bakke ruling and to better contribute to the assessment of capacities for the wide range of desired college outcomes, the admissions ecosystem can and should dramatically widen its range of assessments. That means looking at characteristics, beyond "the big test," that signal potential and affect performance in college and beyond.
