Equity through Mutual Accountability: Collective Capacity Building Helps Educators Address the Needs of All Students
Noguera, Joaquin; Noguera, Pedro
Learning Professional, v39 n5 p44-47, 52 Oct 2018
This article describes mutual accountability, an innovative approach to accountability which opens new possibilities for pursuing educational equity for all students. Mutual accountability calls for each stakeholder -- students, teachers, parents, and administrators -- to work collaboratively in pursuit of educational goals. The article presents two cases of mutual accountability: a low-income, urban California community school and a Pennsylvania school district in which collective capacity building helps teachers and schools become more accountable to each other and more effective in addressing the academic and social needs of all students. The two cases illustrate how mutual accountability plays out at different institutional levels, noting the importance of focusing on the whole child, eliminating barriers to equity, and ensuring that educators are committed to growth and participating in intentional professional learning that builds their knowledge and capacity to provide all students with what they need to thrive.
