Killing Two Birds with One Stone

The lack of time available to adequately teach everything expected throughout the days and weeks in a school year is a major concern for many elementary teachers. The heavy focus on reading, writing, and mathematics leaves little time for science and social studies instruction. However, science is an integral part of preparation for college and career readiness in the 21st century (NRC 2012). The heart of the "Common Core State Standards" ("CCSS") and "Next Generation Science Standards" (NGSS) refers to the need to integrate ELA standards into science instruction and vice versa (Common Core State Standards Initiative 2016; NGSS Lead States 2013). Teachers have an opportunity to battle the time issue through the integration of English/language arts (ELA) within science instruction. It is "killing two birds with one stone," as the saying goes. Integrating science and ELA allows an elementary teacher to focus time and energy on teaching important science concepts and instructing students in nonfiction text, informational writing, listening, and speaking skills at the same time. Interactive science notebooks help accomplish this feat. This article illustrates how the author used interactive science notebooks within a second-grade unit on Earth's systems. Over the course of this unit, students learned about weather and plate tectonics and their impact on the environment. Some of the specific lessons of focus were the layers of the Earth.
